Jason Todd of Batman (DC Comics) reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

See, this is why I hate it when people always talk about him like he’s some dumbass brutish guy with no appreciation for things beyond beating people up.

Jason reads.  He made references to literature even before he died.  He got good grades!  And his safehouse is jam packed with books and even has a fancy teapot.  And the vocabulary he uses—not always, but there are notable moments—suggests a literacy that’s above average.  And then of course there’s the intricacy of things he plans out.

…So yes, end rant, Jason is not as dumb as a lot of people I’ve seen make him out to be.

YES oh god, I was actually just typing up a post when I saw this reblog. Jason has been shown time and time again to be incredibly intelligent. He’s fluent in multiple languages, has the ability to quickly pick up a number of skills such as explosives and training with different types of weapons, and he is very good at strategical planning. Consider the fact that he’s able to do all of this despite years of neglect as a child; can you imagine what he’d be like if he had access to the support and privileges Tim (or even Dick) enjoyed? Yes, sometimes he doesn’t talk “pretty”, but manner of speech (and dialects and accents) aren’t indicative of intelligence. 

It upsets me a lot when people turn Jason into some kind of dumb brute, especially if it’s in the interest of making him an ~hunky romantic foil~ to other characters. It’s terrible characterization, it’s heteronormative, it’s sickening.

All of the Robins are smart.  I hate when there’s this stigma that says that they aren’t all intelligent.  I always thought it was cute how serious Baby!Jason took his grades when he was with Bruce.  And Dick is smart.  And Tim is smart and Damian and Steph.  They are all smart.

Although, you can argue privilege and support for each of them, I believe that Tim had privilege but no support.  Which will only get you about 50% there, if you want to put stock in nature vs nurture, which I do.

Tim wasn’t ever really hounded about his grades by any of his parents.  I always sort of assumed that Tim always had mediocre grades, to be perfectly honest.  Tim was stretched pretty thin, had sort of weird priorities and absentee parents, and quite honestly, an emphasis was never put on how well he did academically.  

Tim was ill-parented for much of his life, and when he was in Bruce’s care he was more or less an adult.  Bruce never really mentioned Tim’s grades as a way to better himself, but as a tool to not have attention drawn to Tim in relation to the mission.  Which is also why Tim purposefully was terrible at sports.  Nothing to see if there isn’t anything special to look at.  

And I have to assume, that when Bruce was making plans for Tim to be the major share-holder of WE, that Bruce knew Tim would have to drop out of high school.  And even though Dick was already well out of high school and college age, Tim would be the one to take over.

I guess I always balk a bit when Tim is mentioned as being the one with all of this support and privilege, though, and not Damian, who you could argue had the most privilege of them all.  And you could argue that Damian’s support was more detrimental to his person then not.

Dick had emotional support and with Bruce, he had emotional privilege.  And Bruce had a true general interest in Jason’s education and happiness, where as I’m still sure Bruce never really cared about how Tim did as long as he didn’t draw attention to himself for the mission.

Considering so much of the Robin series took place in a high school, and we know at one point Tim was being tutored by the class valedictorian even though he was doing fine in class.  We know Tim went to at least four or five different high schools —

I guess, my problem would be that Tim had privilege, but not a lot of support.

Whereas Jason had no privilege or support until Bruce.

So tl;dr —

All the Robins are smart and pretty and awesome — they are all athletic and good.

Stop assuming things like Jason was dumb.  Be a more careful reader, because sometimes when things aren’t really noted on, they are just as important as what’s spelled out on the pages.

Also - I still prefer Jason’s butt to Dick’s.  :-P
